Irish Mason's Random Rants and Ramblings
Sharing in Cyber Space
Everyone likes to share their opinions on just about everything, right? Or am I the only one? I couldn't possibly be the only one! I think cyber space is a great place to share those opinions so here I am! This will be entirely random. Tread lightly and have fun. A sense of humor always helps!

Copying Other People's Genealogy Info
I wasn't sure where I was going to start my random ramblings and rants but then I ran across a situation all too common - and all too frustrating - in the genealogy community. People often copy other people's work without giving credit where credit is due. That's just not right. If I spend hours and hours and hours researching / pay for documents / etc, I get pretty livid when I see my work on someone else's blog entry or family tree. They are essentially taking credit for the research. Now, this writing is not exactly about credit although that's part of it. I think people should acknowledge that others came before and helped in the process. Most importantly to me it gives a way for others to connect to me. What if I make mistakes??? How can people contact me to correct those mistakes??? I've made a lot of mistakes over the years and back in the day when I used to put my tree online I found my mistakes copied over and over and over in other people's trees. Worst of all was a book that was published that had mixed trees from anyone the person who published it could find. It was the biggest mess I've ever seen! It was a book though! A lot of people think that if something's in a book that it's true. It often isn't! I got burned so many times I started hiding my initials in my notes. Guess what I keep finding all over the internet? Yup, my initials! Is it too much to ask that people even take the courtesy of saying thank you for all the hard work?
